Winter in Kabul

Steve finally sent over an email and pictures... so I am going to copy all he wrote onto here:

I hope this letter finds everyone doing well and hopefully, one hell of a lot warmer than I am over here. I am fortunate (ha) enough to be deployed here in Kabul for the worst winter that this city has seen in 15 years. For those of you keeping track, that is 5 years longer than the US (en masse) has even been here. So - its cold. Day time temps have been in the low teens with the wind chill well into the negative digits. Nighttime, as you'd imagine, is even colder and has been taking its toll on the populace. With the extreme poverty, unstable / unreliable utilities, and inadequate housing, there have been dozens of deaths. Sadly, the vast majority have been children, some of whom were less than a year old and had never experienced warmth a day in their short lives. This winter has certainly been a humbling experience, one that I could have gladly done without, but am nonetheless thankful for. I'm not sure I can ever complain about being cold or going without again. More snow is predicted for this weekend starting tonight through monday morning. So, unfortunately, it looks like it will get a little worse in the short term before it gets better.

On the brighter side of life, 210.67 days down, 155.33 to go. Well over half way now and time continues to fly by. Excel is a wonderful tool to drive you crazy if you'd like to know how many seconds you have left in theatre, (13,420,379), or how many meals for that matter, (465). We'll just say that not only am I counting, I am counting with OCD level accuracy how much time I have left. The mission pace has picked up considerably, so I haven't had much time for responding to emails. Sorry about that. I do read every single one and they are all hugely appreciated. This is the first entire day I've had off, (off meaning no mission, still have office type work to do), in 17 days. Basically what I'm saying is that this is the best way I can respond to everyone. And clog all of your inboxes with photos. I'll try to break them up better this time.

I am fortunate enough to be able to travel back to the states for work though. Our next (and final) Program Management Review is in DC for the middle 2 weeks in March which means I'll get to spend some time in Dubai on the way to and from, which is an experience in itself, and then have 10 working days in the US. A blessing, really. Following that, I still owe myself 2 weeks of R&R which I'll be taking the last 2 weeks in April. Upon my return (just in time for "fighting season") I'll only have 60 days left. After that, onto much bigger and better things as we'll say Adios to the states and spend the next 3 years living on the southwest coast of Spain. A more than fitting payback if you ask me.

Again, many thanks for all of the support of me, but more importantly, of Keri and the kids while I've been gone. We are truly in a debt to all of you that can never be repaid. Thank you & take care.

Tomb of Zahir Shah, the last king of Afghanistan and something of a local legend. Both he and his father are the principals who lie here, along with a handful of other royals and Generals. This was a security mission, just making sure our VIP's had a safe outing.

This kid wanted me to ride his horse in the worst way, I didn't have the words to tell him that my 210 lb frame plus 70 lbs worth of kit would not make is 5 foot tall horse happy. Looking back, a pretty stark contrast of young kids trying to make a living and us, preparing for the worst just by being out in town.

Frozen Kabul

Different mission, handing out toys & snacks to the locals. COIN (counter insurgency) in action. The idea is that we promote goodwill, in return locals tells us who is in town, who doesn't belong, who's planning to blow things up. Don't ask where my kit is, body armor tends to make people nervous. (Not nearly as nervous as not having it.)

Another experience I could have done without. This little girl's brother had zero interest in the toys and things I was handing out. He wanted the box I was carrying them in so he could burn it for heat. I ended up giving their mom all the money I had in my wallet. $8. She cried. An afternoon I will not soon forget.

My friend Danny and I, the morning I brought him to the airport to fly home for good. We ended up getting 18" of snow during this storm, it lasted about 2 and a half days.

Different mission, this would be considered a mansion in Kabul. We were, once again, providing security for some visitors.

My sector, for about 5 glorious hours, fortunately a quiet little street in northwest Kabul. Notice the lack of ANY street clearing. When it snows here, the cars just pack the snow into ice and every road is a frozen disaster until April. Joy.

After being deployed in a coalition environment for the last 7 months, I have found that there are certain countries that I I feel I MUST visit, based solely on the people I have met here that hail from them. Austrailia, for sure. The Aussies I've met are excellent and I think it would make a great trip. Greece, definately. The country may be a little on edge just now, but the people that hail from Hellas are unbelieveably kind and, I guess if I thought different, I wouldn't have married one ;) Nepal, I wish. The Gherkas that I have met are some of the most gracious and hilarious guys that I have ever come across. But for some reason, beginning in King's Bay, GA, I seem to make more British friends than anyone else. I don't really have the words to describe it but I feel that this picture, which is of a sign at the only exit point from the British compound in Kabul, sums up pretty well why I seem to see eye to eye with the Brits I meet. At least they're honest.....

Well- I have to admit, I was never a Giants fan before I got married BUT Steve has converted me (as well as the rest of the kids) to the Giants fan base. After a long season... the Giants are playing in the Superbowl and we are ready! All of us got in our gear (I am in Steve's jersey and Morgan is in Aydin's) and headed to a friends for dinner and the game.

Since the Giants have been Steve's team for as long as I have known him and they were playing in the Superbowl- he was not going to let an 8 and a half hour time difference to stand in his way of watching the game. He woke up at 3:30 am and went into the office to yell at his team.

I am SO happy they won-not only for the fact I cannot stand the Patriots but because I would have felt sorry for everyone in Steve's office working with him had they lost and he was lacking proper sleep :) Love you Steve!

Last week, the boys had a Friday night game and Aydin missed it. He stayed home from school (said he was sick but I think he just wanted to hang out with nana) so he was unable to play in his game. A decision I know he regretted as soon as he found out they lost their first game. Aydin and the other starting forward/ and best defensive player in the league were out for the game so his team was not 100%. Maybe he will think twice about being a big fat faker!!

Today however was a different story. They went against the Heat and won 22-19. They are having a great season and so much fun.

I am sorry about the picture quality- my camera broke and is getting repaired so all I have is my phone.... and its KILLING ME!! If my camera was not only 3 months old, I would have already gone out and bought a new one. I dont know how to live without one :)

I cannot believe that it was nine years ago that my sweet little man was born. Time has passed by way to quickly and continues to do so. Aydin has blessed our lives so much and we are so happy he is a part of this family.

He is a great brother to both Morgan and Liam, a great helper around the house and great friend. Aydin, I hope you know how much we love you! Happy Birthday.

Aydin's Lego birthday party

This year for Aydins birthday he had a Lego slumber party. We tried to make it as Lego like as we could... from the gift bags to the cake. Since his birthday is on a Sunday this year we had the party a few days early. They had so much fun all night. I am so happy with how this party turned out and that everyone had a great time.

My friend from work and her boyfriend were nice enough to make the boys name tags and a Happy Birthday banner in Lego block letters. I think they turned out SO cute!

All the boys had their own place setting and a gift bag made to look like a Lego block.

Now we all know that I am not a baker BUT my mom is... and luckily for me (oh ya- and Aydin) she was here to help out with his cake. She made them to look like Lego blocks too...

After playing outside on bikes, scooters and the trampoline and playing basketball, they were starving...

After pizza, they all went back outside to play some more. Around 8:30 we called them inside for cake and presents.

He got money, gift cards, Legos, a Lego board game and a sweet dinosaur made out of scrap motorcycle parts... It is amazing!

Inside each gift bag was a Lego box for each of the boys to put together.

The next game was one we played when I was younger. You get a cup of flour and pack it in a cup. Flip the cup of flour over onto a plate and place a penny on the top. Each person takes turns cutting a sliver of flour off the mold. Whoever cuts too much and drops the penny has to get it out... with their mouth!!

After the games... it was after 10. The boys were ready to watch their movie- Captain America and chill out. By 11:45, they were all finally sleeping and I could finally head to bed.

6:20 AM came around WAY too early. The boys finished the last 30 min of their movie, ate breakfast and played a little more before it was time for them to all leave. This was a great birthday party for a amazing child!!! Aydin- I hope you had the best birthday ever!!

This means we are now more than half way done with the deployment! Steve will be home in 6 months and we cannot wait.

Once again- Auntie Heather, Uncle Mike and Taylor sent an amazing 30 day box. This box came with all the fun things you would want to have a party... and is just what we did! We celebrated making it this far and had so much fun.

Drake family- We are so grateful for all you do and for your boxes every 30 days. We look forward to it your boxes every month (and you all can see why).

Tonight, Morgan went to a friends to spend the night so Aydin, Liam, Mom and I hung around watching a movie, playing games and cuddled. While watching a movie, we looked over and saw Echo chillin on Liams Cars couch. I had to take a pic... and Aydin wanted to get in it.

We have started a reward chart for the kids behavior. For every time they are good, listen, not complain, etc., they earn a tally mark. Each tally mark equals 10 cents. I have to ask myself why I have not done this years ago?! They have been so good lately, they have earned themselves about $25 combined in less than 2 weeks. Well- while at the pet store to get Echo food, they saw a tank full of baby hamsters..... FREE.

Why do I torture myself?! Yes, they pulled their money together, bought the cage, food, and everything else they need to live and adopted two baby dwarf hamsters that were not more than a week old. I have to say... they are not the pets I would have wanted... but they are not the worst either.

The kids were out of school today for teacher planning day so we met with our friends to bowl a few games. Unfortunately- I still suck and lost both games against Carly. Aydin did not play so hot the first game by the second game... he started getting the hang of it and came in second. Morgan was in her her own lane with the younger kids... and she won. It was fun playing today... its been a while since we have bowled!

Since we were the only ones in there, they turned on the lights for the kids.

Today Aydin's class had the opportunity to go to the play Wicked. It was amazing!! I have always wanted to go see this play and it was great having the chance to see it with Aydin. We had such a great time. Earlier today, his class watched Wizard of Oz in class so when we were watching the play, he was able to understand what was going on, who everyone was and enjoy what was happening. I am so glad we went!!

I cannot believe another year as passed. Where did the year go? The kids are all growing up too way fast.... why do they have to be getting so old and big?? I wish time could stop for a while and I can keep them this way for a while longer.

Today is the first day of 2012 and I have so much to be grateful for. I am so blessed with a wonderful family, parents (on both sides) who are the most amazing people and do so much for us, health, and great friends. I do not know where I would be or how I would get through this time in my life without all of my friends that offer their friendship and help. To sum up 2011 in one word would be extremely difficult. Wow- may be a good start.

In 2011:

We have spent the past 6 months part from the one person who makes our family complete. We are so blessed Steve has been watched over and has stayed safe and hope he is continually watched over until he returns home this summer. Steve has been an inspiration to many who know him and a true example of what it takes to be a father, a husband, a son, brother, and friend. He is missed every day! We are finally under 200 days left until he returns and are almost at our half way point (14 days to be exact but who is counting?).

Aydin had been in 3 sports; soccer, football and basketball, excelling in school and my biggest help around the house. He is an amazing brother! I dont know how I would make it through the day sometimes without all he does to help me out around here. He is so smart and teaches me something new everyday. Just recently (my 8 year old) taught me something new about the iTouch/IPhone. How my 8 year old is better at technology than I am still amazes me.

Morgan has played soccer both this spring and fall. She is loving the first grade and doing well in her class. She is the 'little mother' to her brothers and is always asking what she can do around here to help. She is so beautiful inside and out. She has such a sweet personality (most of the time) and loves making others happy.

Liam.... is Liam. This kid has been called Dennis the Menace, a destructive kid, active, nuts, and many more. He is full of energy and SO much fun to be around. We all know if it is too quite, he is probably somewhere is is not supposed to and destroying everything within reach. He is one of the happiest kids I have ever seen and makes us so happy he is a part of our little family.

We have been extremely blessed to spend more time with our family this year than most. I am so grateful for all the times our family has come to visit and be with us through the holidays. I wish nothing but the best for all of you throughout this New Year. May you all stay healthy, happy and safe.

New Years Eve

Tonight we celebrated New Years Eve at home with the lovely Chufo ladies. The kids could hardly wait for the ladies to arrive and begin their festivities. We had more food than we knew what to do with...

The ladies played Monster High for a bit while Aydin watched Spy Kids, then they all came out for some Wii dancing. Around 11:15 we went outside to light off our fireworks. Thankfully our neighbors had sky launching ones so we had the best of both... we got to play with all of our little ones and enjoy seeing fireworks in the sky. We came in just in time to get our cups full of lemonade and begin the countdown with 58 seconds to spare.

Grandpa and Grandma week part 2

Thrusday we had great weather so we headed to the beach. We walked a long way down the beach collecting shells of every kind.

After the beach, we got ice cream at our favorite Summer spot.... and its not even summer anymore!!

Friday we went to St. Augustine. Grandpa loves history and old towns and what could be better than the oldest city in America?

We first went on a walk around the Fort.... leanred all about the Spanish invasion and then headed to lunch.

The distance between our home now and our new place this summer.

After lunch we took a trolley tour around the old town St Augustine and learned all about the history of the area. What a beautfil city!

Saturday, Grandpa had to leave at 10 to go home. We are so lucky he came for the week and feel even luckier that Grandma is here for the whole month of January. Thanks Grandpa for coming out to play with us. We love you!!

Monday I had to work a little in the afternoon so Grandpa and Grandma took the kids to see Alvin and the Chipmunks. They LOVED it!!

Tuesday we got up early and headed to Chuckie Cheeses. Its been a few years since the kids have been and were SO excited to see what we had planned for them.

After playing, we went to eat at (sorry Steve) Mellow Mushroom for lunch. On the way home, we took the scenic route (for whoever know my dad... that would not come as a a surprise) which was quite nice because we had the chance to take the ferry from Mayport into Amelia Island. The kids had a blast.

Wednesday grandma and the grandkids did crafts, played outside and hung around while I worked and grandpa went out with a friend. When we got home, we loaded up and headed to the park. Yes- the park... I know it is the end of December but it is still warm enough here that the park was enjoyable... in short sleeves :)

I tried to get Liam to look through the hole at the same time....

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Well- this year did not quite feel like Christmas with Steve being gone. I even think it was hard for the kids to get into it... that is... up until they saw their presents under the tree this morning and realized Santa came. They woke up at 1:40 AM to see if it was time yet to open presents... then at 1:50... and finally at 2 am, I told them to come camp out in my room until morning. 6:15am rolled around... and who was knocking at our door?? NANA- thats who. She poked her head in and asked, "Aren't you guys going to get up and open your presents?" which did not take the kids more than a half a second to wake up and be at the door ready to go.

We were able to Skype with Steve while we all opened gifts- its days like today that I am SO grateful for modern technology. As hard as it is being away from Steve throughout the holidays, I am so glad he was able to see everything through the computer.

The kids were so fun. Instead of going to their Santa gifts that they were able to see, they came straight to the computer where Steve was on to see him and say Merry Christmas. Liam was more interested in playing with what the kids were opening rather than opening his presents.

We then got ready, went to church, came home and then began playing with all of the toys.... and played for the rest of the day.

Twas the night before Christmas

I cannot believe Christmas is here already!! We were busy today.... Grandma and Grandpa came in at 5pm so all day I cleaned, got the house and rooms ready, cooked Greek for dinner and anything else I needed to do before they came in.

We are SO excited to have them come for Christmas this year. The kids cannot wait to see them. My dad will only be able to stay for a week while my mom is gong to stay for the month of January to help me out with the kids while I finish out my internship.

When they got here, we decorated gingerbread houses, ate dinner and then opened up new pajamas.

Steve bought these shirts for the kids for Christmas but since Aydins was a bit too short for everyday wear, we gave them as their pajamas. They looked too cute for words!!! They are from the show Top Gear- the British one... and are a perfect way to have a piece of Steve with us for tomorrow...

(its one of his favorite shows...)

We then watched an animated Nativity movie and send the kiddos to bed. Whew- what a busy day!! Tomorrow will be an early one... I just hope it is not before 6am.

Today was a perfect day to spend the afternoon at the park. We met Karlie and Suzanne and all their kids at Goffinsville Park. All of the kids brought their bikes or scooters, footballs, and whatever else they felt necessary and played for over three hours. We had a great time!

We took another trip to the zoo today and had a great time. I do believe that every time the kids have a break from school, we end up at the zoo for one of the days...

Like always.... we had a crowd at the zoo. I was babysitting Ty and Tristen today, Jennifer and her kids came, and so did Lacy and her two younger ones. It was great. Liam walked the whole time and loved every minute of it! I think this was his first time he actually saw every animal... and even pointed some out to us.

After church today we decorated our Christmas cookies... and they turned out so cute. This year Liam tried to eat every cookie Aydin would frost... and even got his hands on one of them to eat (or should I say, lick the frosting off?)! The kids are getting better at frosting every year.

I love Christmas time.

Day 210

While Auntie Heather was here for Thanksgiving, she heard all about how much the kids love the game Apples to Apples.... so while we were out one day, she picked it up for them to have for their Day 210. When the kids realized what they were getting... they were SO excited! Since it was pretty late when they finally were able to see what she had sent the kids, they had to wait until after church to play. We put Liam down for a nap and played for at least an hour!

The season has not officially started yet but this morning we had another round robin scrimmage game to see what else needed to be worked on before the season starts. They have improved so much in a few weeks, its amazing. -I'm looking forward to the real games.... and am happy that Aydin is having fun! He has great coaches and am so grateful for them!

Christmas parade

Last year we went with some friends to the Christmas parade in town and decided we wanted to go again this year. The kids brought the chalk, marked their spots for theri candy boxes, and waited until the parade started. It was a lot of fun watching the kids get so excited seeing the different people and groups walk/ride/drive by. Too bad we will not be around next year to make this a yearly tradition...

Yesterday we went to get our tree with a friend and today it was ready to be decorated.... kid style!! I put the lights around with the help of both kids and then handed the decorations off to the them (except for the very top- the tree is almost 10ft tall).

It would not be my first choice of decorations, but I guess thats what happens when kids are involved in the process.... it has the kid touch (and kid ornaments). I would also like to say Liam helped in the decorating but he was quite the opposite. He will be a better cleaner than a decorator. Every time the kids put an ornament within arms reach of his, he would take it down and hand it back to one of us. This kid is too much!!

They are so proud of their tree... they did a great job.

Elf on a Shelf is something that everyone has been talking about.... so this year we decided to try it out. We opened up the box and read the book to find out that we get to name our elf.
Our kids are so simple and unwilling to put thought into a name... so they came up with Bob.
Yep- Bob the Elf.

The kids were so excited to hear they have their very own elf that returns to Santa each night to report how they have been for the day. I just hope this works and they are on their best behavior for Bob!

Getting Liam in the picture was more difficult that it should have been... This is the best of many which should tell you how bad the others must have been :).

Basketball season is here!

This week was the start of basketball. Aydin decided a few months ago that he wanted to play so we signed him up. Monday was his first practice and he really enjoyed it. Today he had a 2 hour round robin scrimmage game where they had four teams play 5 minute games to see how well they played and what they need to work on before the season starts. I have bot been able to make it practices so today was my first time watching him play. I was quite impressed at his ability to lay even though he has never played before Monday. I am proud of him and for his willingness to try new sports.

Black Friday...

Ican say we did go Black Friday shopping but we only went to Target and didn’t even make itout of the house until 11am so I am not too sure if it counts. We were not long because we had a plan to hear tothe beach, hang out, soak up some sun, and enjoy the nice ocean air.....

Boy were we WRONG!! We got to thebeach and all I can say is that it was COLD. It would have been a perfect dayto hang out at the beach if the wind was not blowing so much. The wind chillmade it unbearable. We did however manage to stay long enough to let the kidsplay in the water, run around and enjoy... for a bit.

When we think about it, we all have so much to be thankful for. I am so grateful that I have been blessed with a wonderful husband, children, parents, siblings and in-laws. As I have said many times before, I have the best in-laws anyone could ask for.

This Thanksgiving, Steve's mom, sister, brother in-law and niece came to spend the week with us. They came in on Tuesday and stayed until Saturday... way too short of a trip!!!

Thank you for coming and spending the week with us (and cooking Thanksgiving too). I love you guys!!

I love seeing the days counting down... 30 days at a time. Heather, we are so grateful for your boxes and everything you do for us. The kids look forward to the 30 day box and I look forward to seeing another 30 have passed. Steve, hurry up and come home. We miss you!!

This time being so close to Christmas, the kids got a Lego advent calender. The wanted this last year and we SO happy to see it in the mail. We have even worked out a deal... since ladies go first- ALWAYS, Morgan gets the odd numbers and Aydin gets to open the even numbers. They cant wait!

Last night was Morgans last soccer game. It's a little bitter/sweet. It's been so much fun seeing her play this season but it will be so nice having the week nights and weekends to ourselves for a few weeks until Aydin starts basketball.
Morgan has improved so much this season from last- I cannot wait to see her play this spring.

This morning we had Morgans team party at Chilis. All of the kids got a bag full of goodies and a trophy for their hard work this season. It was a lot of fun and a great way to end an amazing season.

Last few days in DC

Mom left Wednesday morning. We did not have too much planned other than hanging around and getting some homework done. We did manage to get out for a few hours and head over to the American Girl and Lego store.

Thursday Steve was able to come back to the hotel for a few hours during the day so we went to Target and out to lunch. After he went back to work, we hung around the hotel, did more homework and waited to both him to come back and Monica to come in for the night. We just hung out, ordered pizza and enjoyed each others company.

Friday I took the kids to the zoo... and froze!! It was a cold day today and we definitely did not plan for the weather. We only went for a few hours which was perfect. We got to see all that we wanted to and more.

Steve was home by noon so we went to the mall to fix his computer and went to Mellow Mushroom again for dinner. I think if Steve had his way, we would have had Mellow Mushroom every day of the week!!

Saturday came WAY too soon.

I was not ready to say good-bye. Fortunately, we were able to spend all day together. Monica came back in for a late lunch. We went to PF Chengs, Trader Joe's and then headed to the airport. This was the worst ever!! Saying good-bye all over again sucked!

We were so grateful for the opportunity we had to spend the week together (even if it was only in the evenings).

Now we are counting down for his two weeks off in February.

Monday- Happy Halloween!!

Today we (all of us excluding Steve. He had to work all week) played tourist... we started at the Capitol Building where we took a tour. It was amazing!

We were even able to find two of my grandfathers statues and

take a few pictures.

From there, we headed to the Botanical Gardens. It was beautiful!

By this time... we were all starving. We headed to the American Indian Museum to eat and take a look around their first floor. The food was a little different but we were all able to find something we could enjoy.

We then took a walk over to the African American Museum. They had some amazing art in there but could not take any pictures because they did not own their art.

We then came home and got ready for trick or treating in the mall. Morgan was Frankie Stein from the Monster High (Barbie type dolls) and Aydin was 'too' cool for a costume this year and went as a GA Bulldog football player.

Once we go to the shuttle, loaded in... Liam threw up.... Poor little guy missed his first time being able to enjoy walking and getting candy. As much as I felt bad for him... I was bummed because he looked so stinking cute in his bird costume!!

Mom stayed behind to bathe Liam and let him rest while I took the kids out for some candy. What a great idea it was to go to the mall. They got a ton of candy and didnt even have to freeze while doing it.

Tuesday we got up and went to check out the white house and walk around some more. We started out at the National Archives Museum (no photography allowed there either) and then walked over to the White House.

We got home a bit earlier today and hung around until Steve got off work. Gene and Kathy drove up for Richmond, VA and we all went out to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory.

Our week in DC

What a GREAT week!!

The kids and I left early Saturday morning from the Perez's and headed to Washington DC.... after weeks of counting down, we were finally going to see Steve- back on American soil!! We arrived to the airport way too early... which made the wait that much more difficult. It felt like he was never going to get through customs and walk around the corner!

The wait was worse than waiting for Christmas to come...

After Steve got here, we went to breakfast and to the Air and Space Museum to kill time before Steve's mom came in.

Flight simulator... I got sick just watching it go in circles.

Susan had no idea Steve beat her into DC so to say he surprised her would be an understatement. He hid around a wall while we all said our hellos and greeted her and all of the sudden he was tapping on her shoulder... I wish I had her reaction on camera!

We arrived to the hotel and hung around for the rest of the day... for the most part. We did leave for dinner... but that was about it!

Sunday- we hung around, walked around the mall, Steve went into work for a few hours, and then went to Steve's favorite restaurant; Mellow Mushroom! Ahhh... he was in heaven!

Trip to Virginia

Thursday the kids and I packed up and headed to VA to spend the week with Steve.

As much as he does not like his job, I am so grateful that he has it because it required him to be in DC for a whole week to report their progress (or lack thereof) and that allowed the kids and I get to spend time with him when we were not supposed to to see him until February.

Steve's flight was coming in at 6:00 AM Saturday morning, so we drove up to spend Friday with the Perez family... or as the kids would call them; our cousins. We got there late Thursday night and spent all day Friday with them. The kids were so excited to see them, play with them, and send the day together.

Carving Pumpkins

Even though we are not going to be here for Halloween, we still found it completely necessary to carve pumpkins! The kids wanted to carve their own designs this year and it shows. At least this year, they both put their hands in the pumpkin and cleaned out their own (as best as they could).

Bowl Game

Tonight was one of Aydin's bowl games. Since we had an undefeated season, they played another undefeated team in Orange Park and lost royally. Although the defense played an amazing game; the offense couldn't seem to make anything happen.
To me- I didn't care. Aydin played the beat game he has ever played!! He had 6 tackles, a few sacs and a fumble recovery!! I could not be more proud of the way he finished the season.

Can you believe it has been another 30 days?! We love the 30 boxes Auntie Heather sends. They are always so much fun! This time around, she sent a popcorn maker, all of the toppings that anyone could ever want for popcorn, and two DVD's: Transformers 3 and Lion King. What made it even better- it was a rainy day and we were able to stay inside and watch new movies!!

Yulee vs. Fernandina

Today was the last game of the season... and the boys finished their season with a perfect record... 8-0!!
To say the boys creamed Fernandina would be an understatement!! The final score was 46-6!

The coaches told the team last night that if they were ahead by 14 points, defense would be able to run the ball.... and that is what happened. I think every kid on the team had the chance to run the ball and gain a few yards, if not a touch down. Aydin was able to gain 5 yards... and it was SO fun watching him run with the ball. What an amazing way to finish the season.

I am happy for these boys and grateful for the coaches and their time and effort they put into coaching the team.

For breast cancer awareness, before the game started, the team honored Gran (John Kenny's grandmother) for being cancer free for 6 months.

This afternoon we went to the Golfinsville Park for a birthday party... and the kids had a blast. Liam LOVED playing all over the play set, slide, on the swings, and wherever else he could.
Aydin and Morgan played with their friends, with Liam, ran around... and best of all spent a few hours outside in beautiful weather.

Yulee vs. Ponte Vedra

Once again, the Yulee Hornets were able to pull of another win... and an upsetting one at that. We are now 4-0 and the only undefeated team in the league. Ponte Vedra has had an amazing season of their own, they have never been scored on... that was until they played our team!!

Auntie Heather sent the kids a paper chain to count down the days until Steve comes home. Each 30 days, she sends the kids (and I) a box of goodies to have something to look forward to.

Today we are on day 300 which means... only 300 more days until Steve is home!!

What a stressful game!!

This afternoon, we played the Callahan Red today who was undefeated... until TODAY!!
These boys almost met their match... with a tied game 6-6 throughout the whole game until the last few minutes on the clock. They started off a little slow for the first half... but the defense came back strong in the second half.

The final score: Hornets 12 Callahan 6

I cannot believe how well Aydin is playing this season. It is so much fun watching him progress each week and actually have fun doing it. It makes me sad that Steve is not here to see him play. He would be so proud!

Hornets are 4-0 and hope to go the rest of the season undefeated.

Another fun game on the soccer fields tonight.

Morgan did well tonight, no goals for her but she tried!! We played a great team, they had a few kids that could run circles around our whole team. The kids are so fun to coach and watch progress as the weeks go by. Morgan is loving every minute of playing and that is all I can ask for!!

Life with Liam is always interesting!!

Anyone who knows Liam... knows how much of a nightmare he can be, the stuff he gets into, and what he destructs. We also know that every door must be shut in the house so he doesnt get into Aydins legos, Morgan's doll house, the book shelf, my bathroom, the pantry.... Shutting the door to keep Liam out only works when he does not know how to open the door!!!

This morning I heard him in the bathroom... which is not where I want to find him- EVER- and this is what I found him doing...

Yes... That is both Aydin and Morgans tooth brush in him mouth and hand... Yumm!!

Today was Morgans appointment at the children's hospital for the same procedure (a VCUG) Aydin got 2 weeks ago. I have to say... she was hilarious under sedation. She was walking funny, talking funny, and did not want to leave! She cracks me up. Unlike Aydin, she is perfectly fine... no reflux at all!

Today the Hornets took on the Callahan Gold team and once again proved that they are a great team!! These boys are playing so well together it is fun to watch. I am so grateful for the amazing coaches they have and the great group of parents.

Soccer season has begun...

What a game!! We started off slow... which made me worry about how this game was going to turn out. We were down two touchdowns in the first 7 minutes! Well- these boys quickly turned that around... came back and won the game 19-44!! Aydin played his best game I have ever seen him play; having three sacs!

Today Aydin went to the children's hospital to get his kidneys checked out. Both kids have had issues with UTI's so their doctor wanted to have tests done. Nothing major... just have an ultra-sound of the kidneys, sedation and then an xray of fluid leaving the bladder. He did great!! He does have mild reflux but nothing that antibiotics will not take care of...

Another day at the beach

The kids and I meet up with our friends Kelly and her girls at the beach today. The best part about hurricanes over the ocean is the amount of sea life it causes to come to shore. Today we saw crabs, fish, jellyfish, and a horseshoe crab. The ladies caught a few hermit crabs before we got there and made a little 'home' for them.

Liam didnt even want to play in the water because he was so fascinated with the crabs. He talked to them, pointed, watched, and even tried to put the shell in his mouth... until it started moving in his mouth. I wish I would have gotten his reaction on camera- cause it was a good one!!

Well- today we had to brave the heat and support our kids playing their hearts out! I am so proud of the whole football team... today they won Orange Park for the first time in over 10 years!! Our boys did so good... even though it was 103 degrees outside today. What a great way to start the football season. I just hope they keep this up!

Yay- football games have begun!! Today we went to the jamboree. This is where we play two 20 min games to see how prepared we are for the season. 10 min of straight offense and 10 min of straight defense. The boys played great in both games and won both!! I think this season is going to be a great one!!

Where did the time go???

This summer went by WAY to fast- which surprises me considering I was hoping it would go fast. Now that it is officially over... I want it back.

I cannot believe I have a third and first grader!! My little kiddos are not so little anymore...

Aydin is starting a new school this year, Yulee Elementary and has a great teach- Joy Huber. (He did NOT want to take a picture with her this morning... too old for that kind of stuff now).

Morgan is still at her same school with Beverly O'Conner. She is very happy to know she is in the same class with 5 kids from her class last year.

Both kids were excited to start school, although Aydin is not happy about having to start homework again.

I was excited about school too- until I spent a hour trying to drop them off... and an hour and a half trying to pick them up today. Needless to say, I was not in the best mood after we got home. I can say now, I have had time to cool off and start all over again tomorrow morning. This may be the year my kids ride the bus... if those lines do not speed up!!

Football is in full swing!!

Last week was our first week so the boys could not wear pads. Being 100 degrees most afternoons, I feel part of the reason is to get these poor kids acclimated to running around in the heat.

This week is full pads... meaning it is hitting time!! I was a little nervous having Aydin moving up this year from the 5-7 year old team where he was by far one of the biggest kids in Pop Warner for his age group to playing with 8-10 year olds. Not too sure why I was so concerned... my kid is a beast. He is one of the biggest kids on his new team this year which made him a little more comfortable about playing.

He is doing well... I know he can do better but we are still on week one. I just hope he has a great season and enjoys it considering this year will be our last with football for a while (since we will be moving to Spain next summer).

Today our team had a scrimmage game against the other Pop Warner team. They did amazing considering we were one week into wearing pads. Aydin did his 'job' and even had a sac in the end zone on the last play of the game... I was SO excited!! This is going to be a fun season if they continue to play like they did today...

15 months and counting!! What can I say?? This kid is into EVERYTHING!!! We cannot do anything without making sure the chairs are pushed in, the dishwasher does not still have the silverware holder, the bathroom door open (if he is not climbing onto the toilet to climb into the bathroom sink… he is playing in the toilet), Aydin’s bedroom door (he climbs up the bunk bed ladder and jumps on the top bed), and anything else he thinks would be fun…

This is a daily routine... emptying out the wipe container.

He also loves looking at the fish!

Our fish tank is behind the couches… I thought I heard him playing with my grass fillers in the vases but nope… it was the whole entire can of fish food emptying right behind me. The worst part- is I didn’t think anything of the sound because I really thought it was something completely different!

Central Mosque in downtown KabulThis was taken this morning, during a EUM visit at an Afghan Army base. He was sweeping their trucks to make sure they hadn't been stripped down and sold. Same base. Finally got to see a few more pictures of Steve and what the beautiful country of Afghanistan looks like...

I have been very lucky while Steve is gone and get to skype with him almost everyday. Because we are 8 and a half hours behind(yes... Afghanistan is so backwards they are working on the half hour), when Steve gets off of work it is around noon here. I love hearing from him everyday so much, we plan our day around his calls. The kids and I will either do something early and be home by lunch or wait until his call and then leave after. I am not too sure how it will all work out once school starts but I am sure we will figure something out.

As for Steve, he sounds like he is doing well. He has been staying busy most days and extremely boring on the other ones. He is required to be at work at 8am and stay until 8pm- 7 days a week. Fridays are the days he does not have to be to work until 1pm so he normally will spend his time walking the Bazaar. Unfourtunalty for him, this month is Ramadan so the whole town shuts down during the day to reflect on their own individual faith, fast, pray, and spend with their families (sleep too, I am sure).

Having the job he has, he is able to leave base and make deliveries. Here are a few pictures are of him out and around town...

This is in downtown Kabul, note the lack of any rhyme or reason to the traffic flow or pedestrian traffic. It's a tough environment to operate securly in.

Zoo trip

Today we went to the zoo... knowing it was going to be a while until we could go again. With school starting, football, soccer, games, etc., we thought it would be fun to make a day trip out of it... well, morning trip. It was HOT!! We ended up spending most of our time at the sprinklers!

Paper chain

We love Auntie Heather and cousin Taylor!! Like I have said before, if you don’t have an Auntie Heather… you need to find one!! Today we got a fun surprise at the door.

Auntie Heather and Taylor send three boxes, one for each of the kids full of paper chains. These are not your regular chains... these chains are for the kids to put around their rooms as a count down until Steve comes home. All 365 days!! It may not seem like a lot to you… but let me tell you… these chains wrapped around the kids rooms once and then some.

They were SO excited… they had to play with them first before we hung them up.

And then play in the boxes... or in this case... eat breakfast

Yes yes, I know... it is about time the kids had their pictures taken.

While in Vermont, All the grandkids gto together and had their group picture. After they had the group photo, they took individual family and individual pictures.

I think they are great... even if they werent... anything is better than the 3 month old picture of Liam that has been on my wall :)

Aydin has been saving his money since he was baptized in February! This kid was able to save over $200 to buy himself his very own iTouch.

Today we went to Best Buy where he purchased his iTouch with gift cards, cash, and change. I love seeing them work towards something they really want and accomplish their goals!

He was SO happy to have it and I am so happy for him.

What an great accomplishment to save so much for something he really wanted at 8 years old. Way to go Aydin!! You are amazing.

Beach day...

Today we meet up with my girlfriend Karlie and her girls under the pier for some beach fun. What a great spot to hang out. We had shade... water around the pier poles... sea life... and more. The kids caught crabs and fish to play with... and make a home for. I am so grateful we live so close to the beach for days like today.

These are not the best quality pics... Steve has my camera and I am still looking for a new one. Until I find a new one, my phone will have to do! I also didnt even get a picture of Aydin today.. bummer!

As everyone knows, Steve is in Afghanistan for the next year.

I have to say, I am so lucky to have him as my husband. He is an amazing father, friend, spouse, and person. I am so grateful for him and all he is willing to do for the kids and I, his career, and his country.

I hope you enjoy the pictures I will be posting of him throughout the next year... documenting his life over there and what he is experiencing (or what he shares with me at least).

Steve- We love and miss you and are so grateful to have you in our lives. Be safe and know we are thinking of you! I am so proud of you for everything you do and for who you are!

This is Steve in South Carolina. He spent three weeks there before leaving the states for training... Although his internet connection was slow, he still was able to send a few pics...

He is in the third one...Steve and one of his 'buddies'...Packed and ready to go. Its pretty sad that all of his belongings for the next year fits in three small bags. It makes you wonder how much you really need or what is important in life?Once they got to the airport, they were greeted by wonderful people who are there every week to send our troops out to war. They bring food, snacks, books, movies, and love. They have so much respect and appreciation for these troops and show it by giving them a proper send off. I am so grateful for these people who do not even know who Steve or any of these other sailors are and stay with them for a few hours. Thank you great people of Columbia, South Carolina!
After they mingled, they lined up along the runway and shook every individual sailor's hand and thanked them for their service. His first stop was Kuwait, Iraq. He spent a few days on the base there before heading out to Afghanistan. Steve got off the plane and about gasped for air.... at 115 degrees at 9PM. What kind of crazy temperature is that?? He described the air as if he was standing in front of a hot blow dryer all day. With the wind and the heat... it took a few days to get used to it- if that is even possible.

He also told me that no matter how hot it is, he (and no one does) sweat. By the time your body starts to perspire, it evaporates. I cannot even begin to imagine how that would be. For us, it was 100 degrees today but adding 20 more... would kill me!!

Yes, Steve found it interesting enough to send it so I thought I should post this.

I will post more when they come. He has made it safely to Kabul, Afghanistan where he will spend the rest of the year. When he is able to get internet connection, I will hopefully (cross my fingers) get more pictures. If you're interested in seeing his pictures... keep checking for updates.
